Yep, very common arrangement as there are lots of garages that do not have MOT Testers. They have business relationships with local testing stations which are often down the road.

I have already said inform your insurers - You are not responsible what has happened. The repairing garage carries its own insurance for vehicles in their care. DO NOT get involved you will only create problems for yourself.

The owner of that car had a thread on here about it. I assume they settled privately as I don’t think they he updated the thread with the result.

They have informed their insurance, they've been told by their insurers it will be a claim against them because they've been unable to get a response from the MOT centre.

In theory, you could take legal action against the garage for the loss suffered (eg, loss of NCB, excess, etc) and since it was in their possession at the time of the crash, it should be a simple case to win - or more likely, the threat of legal action forces them to put it through their insurance or pay out.
