Their responsibility stops at the meter.  I had this done 18 months ago and was without gas for 3 months - luckily it was summer and I had a shower in the attic heated by electricity.

Why?  Because I had lead pipes internally (probably in the walls) piping gas to boiler and hob.  They tested for a leak and got one so turned off gas at meter.  I got it sorted but it was a hassle and cost me.  My house is 1920's and although mucked around with, prob left the gas supply internally well alone.

When my street was done, they shoved plastic liners through the existing metal pipes all the way through to the meter cupboards.
Except for my house.  The liner got stuck at the front of the house.  I rather suspect it was subsidence of the DIY-built front porch squashing the pipe.
So they stuck a meter box on the front porch and moved the meter to that.  Then they ran a pipe round the side of the house and in through the wall to the meter cupboard.  In my case, the meter cupboard is on the outside wall, so only a bit of drilling was required.  The pipe was connected up to where the meter had been.

Of course, putting the meter onto a subsiding front porch turned out to be a mistake.  A few years later, I had to pay the gas network to relocate the meter again to the side of the house.  That allowed my builder to knock down and rebuild the porch.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

WheresSnoop said: my boiler is unfortunately in my loft but they are not worried about any pipework from the meter onwards just to the meter which is under the stairs.
If the boiler is the only gas appliance, running a pipe vertically up the wall and in to the loft would seem the most direct route. Would save on ugly pipe connections under the stairs and certainly avoid the need to lift floorboards or make a mess of any tiled paths.
