Octopus has offered to install a new meter following a complaint I made. If the old meter proves to be faulty, how many years back can I claim compensation?

There's no compensation (although, depending on how things have gone up to this stage, there might be a small goodwill payment).
You can ask to be re-billed, based on their estimate of what you might've used if the meter as accurate.

What do you want compensation for?  If you can prove that you paid for £200 more energy than you used, then you could potentially try to claim.  But if you can't demonstrate that you've lost out then you'll get nothing

The proof would be if they state the meter is faulty. Knowing when the fault began is the problem.

What originally made you think it was faulty?

I tested a 4 kWh fire over an hour. The readings didn't change. This doesn't make sense because I've long suspected the meter overreads as our usage is high for a family of two adults.

If the reading didn't change then surely your meter is under reporting?

Yes, hence me saying it doesn't make sense. Either way, I'd like it sorted as our annual usage is 15000 kWh.
