I recently purchased a property from McCarthy & stone that they had taken in part exchange from the previous owner. The issue I have is that I keep getting letters from British gas relating to a bill under their tenure. Despite multiple emails etc over a month, they still haven't settled the bill. I have received a further letter from British gas today threatening debt collection agencies. McCarthy & stone maintain they have contacted the energy supplier asking for the bill to be directed to them, rather than the occupier. I have contacted British gas by email on a couple of occasions regarding this matter, to no avail. Where do I stand with this. Many thanks Mark.

It’s somebody else’s debt, you don’t need to do anything about it.2

Have you told BG when you took over the supply and what the readings were when you took over?2

why do you think this is a problem for you?
it is not your debt provided you informed BG of meter readings when you took over ownership.0 -
Tell BG very firmly to get stuffed. Tell them that if they don't call off the debt collectors that you will consider this to be harassment. Tell them to confirm that they have got your account set up as from the date you purchased when the readings were X & Z. Tell them that if they don't sort this out promptly you will be escalating this to Ofgem or whomever it is.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. When I moved in I took photos of the starting readings.
Tried to set up account with BG but online couldn’t do it.
Phoned BG as was told previous occupier account still open.Gave my readings and account was put in my name.
It was discovered the the gas meter was not crowding readings. That took two visits from BG to rectify. It took three phone calls before the account was set up properly. The first two people didn’t do what they said they were doing.
It took 5 months and several updated bills before the correct readings were being used.Despite having smart meters I took monthly reading until it was sorted out.0
