£2000 for wallpaper removal and paint

I paid £2000 to have wallpaper removed from through lounge, hall and  staircase and painted including ceiling, skirting boards. It took him 7 days to complete. The walls were covered with hairline cracks so he spent a lot of time with prep. I bought it was medium price but he was good at his  job. Just interested to know the going rate for painter and decorator.

For 7 days work , if it includes all materials, sounds fair

Sounds reasonable. Seven days at £250 per day and £250 for materials

£250 is a fair day rate.

Depends how long a day is, I hate the turn up at 09:45 but leave at 14:00 guys.

Sounds OK to me, particularly the comment about prep time. That's critical.

To me, any substantial painting job should involve at least 40% prep time - maybe more. Anyone can open a tin of paint and spread it on a wall, but doing it properly needs preparation and that's what takes time and money.

Unfortunately, most of us don't realise that.

I'm not a painter and decorator by the way, just someone who likes to see a job well done.

Removing wallpaper and all traces of paste is a pita.

It always amazes me how many people focus on "time spent" instead of "end result", especialy AFTER the quote and payment.

Were you HAPPY with the quote before engaging? Are you HAPPY with the result? Would you have been happier if the same result was acheived in 2 days? 10 days? a month?

Skilled trades are just that, skilled, if Person 1 had been working hard for 20 years and due to experience and skill can do a job in 1 hour that it would take an apprentice 10 hours, why does the time spent matter? the "job" is worth "£x", as long as the end result is the same.
