Thank you very much for all the replies and advice.  I don't feel quite as bad now.  :)
Lawns have the most amazing ability to regenerate. My garden was a building site for a good 4 years and incredibly has recovered with minimal care and attention. It did involve raking out concrete occasionally but persistence got it  there.

Take a look at this - now totally green!
No man is worth crawling on this earth.

So much to read, so little time.

From my experience do not waste your money on these sort of items.

Looks green enough to me and the damage looks like foot or animal/pet. Remove weeds by hand (making sure you pull up the whole lot including the roots), then give it a mow (on high setting, e.g. 60mm).

As there doesn't seem to be much thatch, I wouldn't bother raking or scarifying. Instead, use a garden fork for aeration (and giving the soil some breathing space!). If you have seaweed liquid, there's no harm to spray it around now (after mowing).

Once the weather warms up from end of this month or early April, you can overseed mixed with fine soil. Do not walk on it for at least 10-12 days. If you have a lawn cover (thin white material), you can use that to prevent birds from feasting on the seeds!

Our lawn was like that when we first moved in (due to previous owner's pet dog and fox visits!) but it is now almost like a green carpet and my "hobby". :)
  • May I suggest ?
if you have little time for garden maintainance / getting frustrated by lack of results??

    Maybe …..
Invest in some good quality artificial grass ??(professionally laid / cut etc)

Relatives of mine have kids and a dog and they now worry very little if the kids are playing ‘in the garden’ due to no dirty feet and the area is used even more now.

In the 4 years it’s been down, it’s taken A LOT of footfall / football and wear and tear and yes……
    It still looks good…..
And yep, it’s an investment as you’ve very little maintenance, so you’re saving time AND using the time you would have been cutting trimming, to do other things !!

Apologies if it’s not the type of answer you’re looking for but just a suggestion / alternative solution.

    Good Luck !!

It could be a few things although March is quite early for lawns looking good

1.Lack of sun due to a shady area
2.Might need aeration as is holding the moisture in the ground
3 could be leather jacket invasion

    Try
Call out a professional company for a quote be there when they arrive. Ask questions then tell them you'll be in touch if you don't want to payout for their services they will tell you if you have the leather jacket grub in the ground- if so you can treat these yourself by buying nematodes

Overseeding when it the temperature improves
Buying a feed such as a liquid seaweed feed for regular feeds
I found Richard Jackson Lawn magic feed transformed my new build  lawn this has a high nitrogen level so be careful not to over feed it with this

    Hope this helps
