    It doesn't even need "rebuilding".

    Nothing wrong with the bottom end. It just needs some attention to the valvetrain. The chain clearly skipped on startup, and valves touched pistons. The pistons'll be fine, because it didn't happen under load. But some valves will be a bit bent.

    The upgrade kit includes cam cover, cams, chain, cam carrier.

    The only difference between the work they're proposing doing now, and the work that would've been done if they'd done it properly to start with, is lifting the head to replace the valves.

    I don't think you have much choice but to allow them to rectify their mistake.

    Although skimming a head regardless is not best practice as it can cause issues later down the line. There is only so much material that can be removed, so skimming the head should be done only when there is a reason to do it.

    Sounds like the mis-timed the engine if they are going to have to replace the valves.

    I thought Pug diesels had sacrificial rockers? Although presumably not needed because it’s a chain rather than a belt, and of course chains last a lifetime…
