Royal Mail redirection

Previously when I moved property I had my post redirected to a relative but that is no longer possible.
I will not have an address as I am moving to the other side of the country and will not look until I have sold my current property so as to avoid disappointment.

I see it is possible to get mail redirected to a P.O box for up to 6 months, have any of you had experience with that or have any other suggestions please?

I'm not sure I follow what you're saying...

... but a Royal Mail redirection should only need 5 days notice.  So as long as you know your new address 5 days before you move, you should be ok to redirect mail to your new address.

Or are you saying that you might change addresses multiple times, before you finally 'settle down'?  If so, you would have to cancel the redirection each time you move, and pay a fee to set up a new redirection (with 5 days notice). Is that the problem?

I guess there's a risk that each time you cancel a redirection and set up a new one, there's a risk that it isn't seamless - and letters end up were you don't want them to be.

No, I will sell my property and not even look for a new home until it is sold and the money is in the bank.
I will then find a short term rent, maybe a holiday lodge.

Whenever I have used redirection it has been sporadic at best, with about half of the mail going to the old address anyway.

The previous residents of my current property have redirection and yet I still get some of their mail.

So my advice is to move everything to online statements where possible (you can always download as pdf and print if you really want).

That said, redirection adds some security because it's part of the checks banks can use. i.e. there will be a flag in the address to say main is being redirected.

£20 for them not to deliver for 10 days, some areas you get that for free!

I know this isn't what you're asking about, but what you say sounds very confusing...

The following 3 things will all happen on the same day...
    • 1) You will move all your remaining furniture and belongings out of your house
    • 2) You will leave your property (forever)
    • 3) Once 1 and 2 above have happened, you will get the money in your bank

So you'll need somewhere to sleep that night (and somewhere to store your belongings), plus somewhere to sleep until you can find a short term rental, and move into it.

So, for example, are you planning to stay in a hotel for a while, and rent some storage space?

It might be easier if you arrange a short term rental when you exchange contracts on your sale - maybe 2 to 4 weeks before you 'get the money in the bank'.

Then you will have what's left of the 2 to 4 weeks to arrange mail redirection as well.

I'm a bit confused. Why can't you redirect mail to a relatives address? How do they know where you will be living? We redirected all our mail recipients when we moved house last year, including three relatives who live overseas who we have received mail for for years. Thought they just asked you which address to send it to.

    Thanks for the replies,

Yes I have been trying to move everything to paperless billing but still get some that I assume have to be sent by post. I went paperless with a bank last year and no longer receive paper statements but did get a notification of a change in credit card fees last week.

The relative where I had my mail redirected to previously has passed away.
On completion I will move my furniture and belongings to storage while I search for my new home, not sure of the exact area yet. B&B for a few nights until I find a suitable lodge or something for 3-6 months.

I stayed in a lodge for 3 months on my last move and it was not possible to have mail redirected there.
