Unfortunately this is a very costly lesson (and at a very bad time for us). I would have never hired a car without insurance.
Not much use now but for future reference getting excess insurance separate to the hire company is generally way cheaper. Cost me £17 for 7 days hire this week, hire company were after more than that per day.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

She reiterated that the crack only appeared in the morning and she didn't see a crack the day before when she was driving.
Your flogging a dead horse, doesn't matter if there was a chip that expanded, if a stone hit it, local lowlife hit the screen with a hammer... whilst the car is your control you are responsible for the damage it sustains. If you dont want to have that liability you buy the insurance.

The original price was ok, probably should have just paid up and not messed around and caused them to check and realise they'd undercharged you.

The new price does sound high, though it depends if there are electronics built into the screen etc. I'd certainly ask for a breakdown of the cost, its likely including loss of rent and an admin charge
