    Thanks all

I’m already signed up for online correspondence, and my email and address are up to date.

I have notifications enabled for the HMRC app.

I’m on PAYE through my job, it’s just that I don’t earn enough to have to pay tax.

Unfortunately looks like I may need to contact them to sort it :/
Have you checked your junk folder?
    Yeah, nothing there

    Thanks all

    Getting notifications

There was a balance of responses, but the majority said they get notifications
HMRC might send you a copy of the latest code but if you aren't liable to tax you won't get them automatically when anything else changes.
Ok, thank you. It's just difficult keeping an eye on it, as while if I paid tax (had it taken in error via PAYE) it should be corrected through a refund, I'd rather that my tax wasn't speculatively taken by HMRC regardless.

You can read about the background here relating to tax codes not always being issued.

    Thanks - this is helpful.

I've had HMRC take tax incorrectly due to an emergency tax code being applied that I was unaware of (subsequently amended and refunded), so while I can understand that it's easier for their ops by not issuing notifications, it isn't so great for me

You have to be getting a fair chunk of money for the emergency tax code (1257L) to result in tax being deducted.

And any excess tax deducted for a particular tax year is always repayable.

Isn’t 1257L the standard tax code?

I had something or another LX at some point which is what I was referring to

Yes.  Which is also the emergency tax code.

Often used on a non cumulative basis, which is what the X signifies.

Well I've just wasted 45 mins of my life waiting for HMRC to answer my call. I've had 3 tax code changes in 3 months plus after paying some tax in January that they said I owed on savings interest from 23/24.
2 of the tax code changes were not notified to me. I knew about them as my private pension provider notified me. The 3rd change was a tax coding notice for 25/26 received last week. I've looked at my tax account via government gateway and  despite everything ,including the phonecall to HMRC, am really not much wiser. The guy I spoke to only seemed able to confirm what the coding notice said. When I asked how the figures were calculated, he couldn't help. I gave up. He said I may get another tax code change this year after April. I've no idea whether or not they've got it right and it's hard to check what interest I got from who and when during this tax year or 24/25 as I change my savings accounts each year. I just hope they've got it right.

You can write to HMRC and ask for a breakdown of the interest notified for 23/24 but, if you don't have records of interest received or access to your accounts to check the inter4est statements, you won't be able to check much.
