Hi everyone, thanks for the discussion. We've just published an MSE News story about the council tax rises, which you can read here:
At least the majority of council tax increases are at a lower rate than the increases in wages.

Hardly, State pension increase was 4.1%
And it’s not just council tax, is it? There's the water + energy increases on top of that.

Smaller councils without social care duties can only increase bills by up to 2.99%.

Annual growth in employees' average earnings for regular earnings (excluding bonuses) was 5.9% and total earnings (including bonuses) was 5.8%.
The National Living Wage is 6.7% higher and 16-20 year olds is rising by 17%

So things are looking good at the moment, for workers and some retirees.

My council tax went up 5% and this week only half the refuse and recycling was collected!

...and there seem to be alot of street lighting not working, which is fine so long as I get home before it's dark and don't need to go out later.

Have you reported both issues, they won't fix them if no one reports them.
I reported 12 streetlights not working a couple of weeks ago, it was a problem with the electricity substation.

thanks at @Baldytyke88 yes all reported but it takes months to get anything fixed.  The street lighting has always been a problem, for over a decade I repeatedly report, the council takes several months to fix.

The recycling gets collected eventually, then is collected regularly again, then it goes back to only partly being collected. Recycling is all in correct containers and visible at front of property.

I also report regularly about how recycling and food waste is left littering the streetbut nothing much changes.

Yes, I have reported that too, in my area it was caused when the bins were emptied into the refuse wagon, some of the bins did not have lids.
