Probate Application - figures requested on Probate Application differ to IHT Online Checker

Once we have done the Online IHT checker, it comes out as no IHT payable - which we expected. The printed calculation to accompany the Probate Application shows the same figure for Gross and Net Probate Value. However, after putting in these figures, the calculation throws out a different Net Value. We can identify the difference as the debts payable from the joint owned assets, but wondering why the figures are shown differently. Is this correct? Any help will be appreciated

  • Can you advise me?Im planning to do my  late partner's probate using an online specialist DoYourOwnProbate, but am wary as have seen comments saying its a bit misleading as you still have to post off all the key papers e.g Will, various other forms.Plus what does it actually cost in total cf what Solicitors charge??Death was early July and HMRC started pestering me as Executor within 2 weeks!!!Disgraceful! No sensitivity.Typical Govt!

Is there any reason why you don’t feel able to do this yourself? Unless the estate is complicated you should be able to do it without specialist help, if twill be faster as well as cheaper, and there is plenty of help available here if you need it.

Being pestered by HMRC within 2 weeks of death is not normal, what are they pestering you for?

PS. In future it is best to start your own thread rather than hop on to an old one.
  • Thanks for your comment, sorry Im new to MSE forums hence my misuse of threads!I was a bit miffed by the speed with HMRC tbh, no idea why other than I noticed the letter came from Bradford which only deals with PAYE or so Ive always thought. The only income my partner had was  pension, 80 % of that was State Pension and is paid Gross and may not have been taxed since 2022-23 due to illness, even so its piddling amounts after the PA offset .What it tells me is that HMT are very desparate!I hoped doing it online would be a lot quicker based on anecdotal reports I come across, but maybe not.Its a very simple Estate so maybe I will do it myself now.As Executor, am I required to take an Oath of some sort? Its mentioned in my Probate book but thats quite old now.
Cant imagine HMCTS are going to hurry it along given no IHT is involved.

Executors have not had to make an oath for a long time, and since 2022 have not had to do an IHT return for excepted estates. As long as his assets are below £325k no IHT return will be required, just the probate application.

I suspect the HRRC income tax query is coincidental to your partner’s death and he may have received this himself if he was still alive. You will probably need to do a final tax return for his estate and have to pay some income tax, but that can wait until you have actually obtained probate.
