Completing on my house tomorrow but still living in rented property for the next 30 days

Options
Me and my girlfriend are completing on our house tomorrow but we still have some time left on our tenancy for our flat so aren't moving in immediately, we aim to have fully moved by the end of the month.

Is it straightforward to pay two lots of council tax, electricity/gas bills in the meantime as we will have both properties under our name for an overlapping period?

Is there anything specific we need to look out for until we have finished the tenancy at our flat and fully moved in to the house?

No issues with paying council tax and bills in both properties, just be mindful of your insurance on the new property, you may have to stay overnight a few times before you fully move over to ensure its not invalidated, check terms.

I don't see any problems, but not sure if it will be one or two different online accounts with a utilities company if it's the same for both properties.

You could move into your new house officially, and your partner remain at the old property, that way you pay 75% CT on both properties (single occupier discount). Would need to be legit otherwise it's a crime. Might not be worth it for a month. If you pay your council tax over 10 months, this month is free anyway so might not make any difference.

Energy company won't care so long as someone is paying. Our insurers covered both our old house and new house for up to 30 days after exchange - worth checking whether that is the same in your situation after completion.

    It is not a problem.
Also, if you are currently with one of the energy suppliers that offers referral bonuses, take the opportunity to refer yourself at the new property and bag two discounts.

Well, no, its still a whole year of council tax just paid in 10 months, its not two months "free". If you move in or out during these "free" months pro rata amendments are made.

As above, no issue. Contact the council(s) and utilisy providers with your move in/out dates and any opening/final meter readings and they will sort out your accounts. If there's any outstanding balance or refunds due they should settle them.

If you're lucky, then one or both of the councils might even offer a temporary discount for unfurnished properties. Mine did, so when I moved out of my last rental and had a 2 week overlap with the new one, I at least didn't have to pay CT on both properties at the same time.

Write to the council explaining that you'll not be moving in immediately (or you'll not be living in the rented property)

We did this and the council gave us a month's grace. It's a grey area and I can only speak for my own local council.
