Reclaiming overpaid PAYE tax, unable to contact human at HMRC

OH completed his tax return for 23/24 which showed an overpayment of about £400.  He has tried reclaiming this via the website and the app, putting in his bank details, and then nothing happens. Zilch, no money from HMRC. Financial advisor has suggested calling them.

Last time, several years ago when employed by a different employer, he needed to speak to HMRC he had to call his specific tax office. Has this changed? His coding on his payslip is 948 T100, but that doesn't seem to come up with anything when searching online.  He called a general number this morning but got sent down a rabbit hole and couldn't actually speak to someone.

Any ideas please?

  • You could try the web chat option.  There is often a long online queue but I have more success this way and get issue sorted.

When logged in to HMRC account, it pops up with ask HMRC a question, I typed in "transfer to an adviser", then joined the queue!

    When was the return submitted?

Has it been signed off yet by the HMRC?

He's been invited to apply for it to be returned, but when he puts in his details, nothing gets paid over. He's had the same problem in previous years.  I think he submitted it Nov/Dec

Can you explain exactly what you mean by that?

The phrase you have used seems more relevant to a PAYE refund, not one arising from a Self Assessment return.

Yes that's right (see subject title) it's overpaid through PAYE. Combination of incorrect tax code and charitable donations. 40% taxpayer.

    Let me phrase that differently.

Is it a PAYE refund that HMRC have notified him of via a P800 calculation or a Self Assessment refund?

It doesn't matter what he entered on a tax return, a PAYE (P800) refund and Self Assessment are two completely different things, even if the Self Assessment refund relates to PAYE income.

Then repeatedly trying to claim is a waste of time.

He should try calling at 8am and then whatever the problem is can be resolved and they refund issued.

He tried that this morning, but ended up down an electronic rabbit hole without actually speaking to someone. That was the reason I asked the question, is there a tax office tied to the tax code I posted first posting? He called a general enquiry number but isn't sure it was the right place to call.

No, all calls go to call centre.

If you go onto online  assistant and keep saying you want to speak to adviser it may work.

Trying as early as possible is probably best before it gets busy.
