I've just heard about this from a neighbor and was wondering if this still applies?
I've had an extension a few months ago and gone through SHEFFIELD building regulations for an extension on the side of the house where we have the electric and gas meters and was told there would be no issues with building around them.
My neighbor has just had to have his moved as his was in a porch which was done many years ago but mine just been done.
If it needs moving who stands to the costs? I wasnt told it needed moving before we built and cant afford to have it moved now. Thanks

If you want the pipes moved, then you have to pay.  I had to have mine done as the meter box was attached to a front porch that was cracking up and needed to be demolished and rebuilt.  I contacted my regional gas operator (SGN round here) and handed them lots of money.
At least they have really good customer service when I needed to ask them questions.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Not allowed if service is plastic even with the fire resistant sleeve.
NG/Transco guys now have to flag it up and some regions will move for free if customer has inherited it but charge if they had it done other regions are charging everyone.
If the service is steel there is not an issue.

they are still in the original place which is now been built around as a utility room and dining room, I dont want them moved as it was far too expensive and before I started the work I contacted building Regs and Gas and was told 'they could stay where they are if I dont want to pay to have them moved'. the box around it is plastic and its now hidden with shelves but access is still available and just had them come for meter readings and had no issues
