Ford Fiesta Rust- how to fix

2005 Ford Fiesta- 100k miles, great car only needs a few hundred quid a year for repairs/service and is sound.

however previous accident wasn’t repaired causing rust, my fault on reflection. It’s causing water ingress in the boot which is not ideal but more worried about further rust spread and MOT failure long term

This piece appears to be all the way through

Due to the location of the rust it would be difficult to sand and repair behind as it’s between the light bay.

also it appears to have rusted through which assume means a cut out required?

I really want to keep this car going another 50k miles at least.

1. how best to temp /perm repair DIY? Sand/fill/paint?

2. What’s the damage at a garage, if it’s a £1k+ repair it’s essentially a write off. Any ideas on price?

thanks all

Most of that just needs rubbing back and some paint use smooth hammarite for the hidden bits.

The bit on the wing is more tricky, some rust cure and some black smooth hammarite to keep the water out might slow it for now. I cannot see how rust there could ever be an MOT failure so it's not about to fail any time soon.

If you can get behind spray some cavity Wax Dinotrol is similar.

    Thanks for the reply.

other annoyance is the water coming in the rust here. I’m not a welder so without hammering it and putting some mastic on it I’m not sure?

That looks like a bit of seam-sealer lifting. I doubt that's your water ingress, but easy enough to test... Just put a bit of black electrical tape over it. If that sorts your water ingress, sorted.

    On a 20yo Fiesta, I really wouldn't sweat it.

There are rust neutralisers that you can paint on.  The one I have used in the past is Kurust (now sold by Hammerite).  It's a milky liquid that turns to a hard blue-black substance on contact with rust.  Don't over-apply it, as it stains paintwork if it runs.

Once the rust has been neutralised, it can be painted over as normal.

It can be used to treat heavier rust, but it won't work miracles.  If the rust is breaking through from the inside of a panel, then painting the outside won't stop it.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
