Yes, male partner should get a letter in due course about switching to new style ESA.

I can’t remember exactly what it was called (it’ll come back to me in the middle of the night) but there was an exception for a period of time whereby those who claimed very young got conts based ESA regardless of NI conts etc.

It was Incapacity Benefit in Youth on IB but I can’t remember the ESA equivalent.

However, sounds like female was IB with IS top up then went over to ESA contributions based with income related top up
I think I might have missed something out that maybe important - the female got SDP (I think it was called - severe disablement benefit NOT severe disability premium although she got that too) and then topped up with IS due to low income.
Male partner got IB then ESA CB as previously stated.

I seem to recall that earlier we looked into to all (like when the ESA switch kicked in) and we concluded that effectively we have the same protection but through slightly different routes due to female SDP and male IB.

OP I'd be really interested personally if you did end up getting a letter too. I advise lots of people as an amateur and this isn't a scenario I've come across

I’m very grateful for all the advice so I can assure you that I will make sure I report back once this all shakes down and let you know what they conclude.

The DWP employee at the ID check did express that our situation is highly unusual that they don’t see very often so I don’t know what to make of that.

Bit in bold: it was Severe Disablement Allowance. SDA was abolished for new claims in April 2001. Then current recipients of SDA who were aged under 20 on 6 April 2001 were moved to long-term Incapacity Benefit on 6 April 2002 (the reason for the year long delay in moving from SDA to IB was that the qualifying period for getting the long-term rate of IB was 12 months).
