is it possible to stop the interest you pay on credit cards if you are struggling financially?

You can request that the interest is frozen, but the lenders are not obliged to do this for you, although many will.
Have you spoken to one of the free debt charities or CAB to ask for advice? They have lots of experience in helping to manage debt, so it would be a good idea to give them a call.
There is also lots of advice on here-the Debt Free Wanabee board has people who have experienced this situation personally, so why not have a look? They will be able to recommend ways of reducing your outgoings and upping your income, if necessary, to get your finances sorted out.
