Problems with teak oil on outside furniture
PaddyMoloney
Last spring I applied a couple of coats of Furniture Clinic teak oil to various items of garden furniture. I was very careful to completely cover all the surfaces. Within a couple of weeks blotches appeared on the furniture (see the attached photographs). What is happening, how can I resolved the problem and how can I ensure that it doesn't reoccur?

No expert but I suspect it is caused by whatever was on there before, when they were made. The way I've always done it is to pressure wash all the crud off, sand down a bit then use the oil.
Having said that, they look like my "cheap as chips" Homebase garden chairs, nothing can make them look good!Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.1 -
Thanks. Yes, they are cheap as chips Homebase chairs, so you have a point.EssexExile said:No expert but I suspect it is caused by whatever was on there before, when they were made. The way I've always done it is to pressure wash all the crud off, sand down a bit then use the oil.

Just paint them with Cuprinol colours will last far longer then the teak oil0

Is it mould/mildew?
I read somewhere that the oil element feeds/encourages mould growth.
I use "Teak wonder dressing and sealer" for my ancient garden bench and it still looks pretty good.
The teak wonder stuff is fairly pricey - made for yacht decks apparently - but it's very quick and easy to apply and lasts for ages.0
