Vanguard?

s Vanguard still the best platform to invest in an index fund? I know they've added a fee, which I have no issue with, but I was just wondering before I start.

Depends how you define best - what are you looking for?

As above, what do you consider 'best' in order for Vanguard to fit those criteria, either before or after their pricing change?

Vanguard used to be cheap for small accounts and expensive for large accounts. It is no longer cheap for small accounts. Their website and customer service are no better than average. Vanguard should be safe, but no more so than some other (often cheaper) platforms. Vanguard has always made a big thing of cost being the main driver of long term performance, but it is becoming increasingly uncompetitive.

I'm not sure it has ever been best.  Mainly because
    a) it only offers Vanguard funds and isnt whole of market
    b) it doesnt even offer all of Vanguard's funds
    c) Vanguard funds are not the best in every area (no fund is)

They may be best in certain scenarios if someone has the mind set on a certain fund or funds that they consider are best

OP was asking about platform selection rather than fund choice, although obviously one can influence the other....

Vanguard was once a trendsetter / market leader. Times change.

When I was with Vanguard for a brief period of time I wouldn’t say they were best for anything certainly in terms of customer service and the user interface of their portal. Even when I left them they still sent statements 3 months later with a residual balance which hadn’t been transferred. They are very much overrated in my opinion.

    Other options:

    Trading 212
    CMC invest
    Prosper
    Freetrade
    Investengine

I use T212 and CMC invest and am happy with both.

There are plenty of options 'better' than those too, depending on what the OP is looking for.
