i just looked back on my British Gas account
we did receive a bill for Aug and Sept 2024 which was £53.00 had the boiler replaced middle of Oct and that seems to be when we have the higher bills - unsure if that means anything?

it’s a very old meter. yes we took the opening meter ourselves. we have knocked the thermostat down so hoping that will help.. also we don’t have much insulation - not in the walls or loft it’s on our long list of things to do🙂

Ah, I was hoping you wouldn't say that!
The serial number begins E6S which means it's probably one of these:
It really needs replacing and might (might!) be over-reading.
    Paging @MeteredOut ...
PS this problem has been known for a decade at least. Here's a thread from 2015.

thanks so much for all your help.

I guess if it’s one that needs to be replaced I need an engineer from British Gas to come out and look for me? il have a look at that thread now!

It gets colder in the winter...
Less flippantly, read the meter on the wall when going to bed, then switch the gas fully off using the lever or knob next to it. Read the meter again first thing in the morning. If the reading has changed then the meter is faulty.

You’d expect higher use from October onwards as that is when most people turn their heating on of course - the question is in your case whether the change of meter was coincidental on the timing or related to the high bills. I’m going to say the former though - as your August and September gas use was probably pretty much just for hot water - yes? To give you a clue, our gas spend for the two months August and September was under £15 - and while you might use more hot eater than we do, my guess is you don’t use that much more?!

Good advice from Qriz and Gerry here though -  if there meter is the culprit here you may well be able to get your billing adjusted later, so follow the steps suggested here and in MeteredOut’s thread which was linked to.

You've used more than the typical amount for a whole year.  But that's because it's a bungalow.
Sorry if I'm being thick here, but why would a bungalow use more than a house?

Think of a hose and a bungalow as a box. For the same total floor area, a bungalow has more roof area and more floor slab.
