Sky Plus: Box has died.

Hiya 
Just after a little bit of advice please surrounding Sky Plus. I'm about to call them as our box has spectacularly died this morning and we'd like a replacement. We've had it fitted less than 2 months so I'm guessing it would be a straight swap.
I'm just wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem and if they could tell us what happened please
Since we got it:
When you select a channel to watch it flashed black for a second before giving the channel. We thought that was normal but according to my brother on Christmas Day - his doesn't do it and neither does his best friends. I asked my best friend and she said the same - hers doesn't do it.
Monday
Issues with the sound when watching sky one. We checked other channels and they were the same.
Today
Mum said something about having to reset the box herself this morning as it was showing no channels, will find out more when she gets home soon.
11.00-11.40
Watching something that we had recorded a few moments earlier and it started stuttering. It hadn't stuttered when we were recording it so I pressed stop and the live sky was doing the same thing. When I turned off the sky from the mains, I had a flickering picture of This Morning (the programme I'd recorded) on the screen as though it were paused.
When I turned the box off from the mains the flickering picture came back.
I turned it off from the mains again and the sky wouldn't turn back on - though the flickering picture remained onscreen.
For a few moments after, the DVD recorder (that I had been recording onto) wouldn't respond either and I had to unplug that to make it work.
When I got the DVD out that I'd been recording to it was blank.
After plugging the sky plus box back in again, it now will not turn on.
Light does not flash on the box to show it has got the signal from the remote although red power light does shine.
Can we get into what we have recorded on there? 40% of harddrive was in use.
We now have no television what so ever as we have no ariel.
We were going to cancel but got offered a better deal. We downsized to a smaller package and paid £49 for the box and installation.

You will need to watch that when you took the sky+ deal that you are not tied for 12 months and therefore cant cancell...0

One thing you could try is this
Unplug sky+ box
hold backup button ON THE BOX while plugging box back in. until lights start flashing, then release button and wait. It takes a few minutes to finish and is a little nerve-racking but it can do the trick.
This will force a firmware upgrade to the latest and could repair it in case its become corrupt..
Failing that you will have lost all info on the HDD0 -
You could also try a planner rebuild, which sometimes helps problems
Services, then press 4 0 1 'Select' then 'Planner Rebuild'.
This takes a while, but doesn't lose any information.
I have to say it does sound like you're going to need a replacement box, though, in which case yes I'm afraid you lose the stuff on the HDD.Says James, in my opinion, there's nothing in this world

Thank you guys

It's been unplugged for an hour and I've just put it back in and fingers crossed it appears to be working so I'm currently beavering away and - hopefully - recording everything off the HDD.
Having said that - as I write this the DVD recorder has just turned itself off half way through recording the this morning thing I recorded and did the same earlier so I'm wondering if there's a fault there too (and I'm not going to be able to clear it!)

Scarts at the back.
I've put a new disk (and different format disk - was RW+ last time, this time is -R) so I'm hoping it'll work better now. I'm recording a different programme now (My Family Christmas special that was recorded few days before today's programme
) so I'm hoping it'll work alright. 0
