I agree the number of gambling ads is atrocious, more so if you also watch certain tv chnnels.
The number of gambling ads pails into insignificance compared to the number of ads for funeral/cremation plans.
I presume advertising in the daytime, or on the less watched channels, must be pretty cheap, but some of these companies must be paying for at least a hundred ads every day. It must be a very profitable business !1 -

Reference a post on here about various gambling checks & balances.
I know people who are working crazy crazy hours to feed their gambling habits and are getting/got themselves in long term trouble unless they achieve better results soon.
Gambling is okay and fun if in balance, but when it gets out of hand, it can be horrible.
I still think TV & Radio adverts should clearly post the income & and prizes percentages so people can easily see how bad the odds can be or are.0 -
I find the most expiditious way to reduce the number of gambling adverts I hear on the radio is to listen to Radio 4. 100% effective, and I recommend it to anyone (except when "You and yours" is on).Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20231

At least they used to use blue liquid, now it is red.2 -

I was more focussed on the timing bit.
What's next someone sitting on the loo wiping their bum and then showing uis the toilet tissue saying "Andrex removes more and polishes better' - all while I am trying to eat my pie, chips and gravy?
You can also opt not to eat whilst watching the box too!2 -

How far, exactly, should we take that? At the end of the day, if people are determined to gamble excessively (or drink excessively, or do drugs, or pay for !!!!!! sites or anything else) they'll do it anyway.1 -

I find it hard to say something is personal choice when you are surrounded by constant messages to gamble (but make sure you do so responsibly!). I have younger brothers into sports and both struggled with gambling in the late teens. It’s completely normalised and pervasive. If you are struggling with it, could you change radio stations or put a playlist on? If it’s more that you think it’s wrong, you could write to your MP but I don’t think you’ll make much difference.
Saying "always gamble responsibly" is like telling a drug addict to "always use responsibly".
Telling those who're addicted to gambling to gamble responsibly is pointless.
All you can do is switch stations.
Where I'm less inclined to concur, however, is with the matter of the ineffectiveness of gambling regulation and/or banning the practice completely. Yes, there would be some who would make the effort to continue playing games for money if gambling were to be banned, but they would be a hardcore minority. The real problem is with those who aren't hardcore gamblers and only do it because the pursuit is freely and easily available. Doris next door who plays internet bingo whilst sitting on the sofa after dinner is less than likely to want to carry on gambling if to do so requires going out at midnight to a smoke-filled gaming den up a rubbish-strewn alley.
I think this one is about reducing harm to many, rather than stamping out the problem entirely. Admittedly, prohibition didn't work in the States, but the two aren't analogous. There isn't a substitute for the social aspects of drinking, but there are myriad ways of wasting time on the internet that aren't gambling.
If I were in charge, I'd probably start by restricting gambling to licensed premises only - casinos, clubs and betting shops. Taking it out of the home would be of huge benefit.0
