Had two policies due to auto-renewal

Hello. I changed car insurer last June but in September my existing insurance renewed which meant I paid car insurance to two companies between Sep and Feb. The insurance which auto-renewed has offered me half the money back, do they owe me all the money by law?

If the automatic renewal happened due to their error they should refund you in full.

If it was due to your oversight, not deselecting the option, then bite their arm off for their goodwill gesture of 50% as they would have been partly liable if you had had a claim in that period.

No. There is no law requiring that.

If it was an error on their part, then you would expect a full refund.  However, if you failed to tell them not to renew, then you would expect them to refund half and your new provider to refund half.        Sometimes, an insurer may voluntarily refund the whole premium with evidence that you were dual insured but yours doesn't appear to do that from what you have said.

Thanks for your replies. I will ask the new insurer for half refund as well.

They don't owe anything 'by law' assuming you were provided with notice of the auto-renewal.
