Hanging heavy mirror on plasterboard?

Hi everyone,

I need some advice on how to safely hang a large, heavy mirror (1200x1200mm) on a plasterboard wall. The mirror has a metal cord attached at the back, as you can see in the pictures.

I’m unsure if the metal cord alone is enough to support the weight, and I want to make sure I use the right fixings for plasterboard. I bought some yellow and red Gripit fixings.

What’s the best way to hang this securely?
Are the gripit fixings enough and what should I pair them with to support the cord?
Or would it be better to locate the studs behind the wall? Also, would extra brackets or safety measures help?

Any suggestions or recommendations would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!

If you can't use a stud, my preference is hollow wall anchors.  The fixings you bought likely have a weight rating on the packet.

    Hi lb.
That's 'heavy', but not that heavy. You can pick it up with ease, yes? It's, perhaps, 10kg, maybe 15 tops?
And, that wire - provided it's properly tied - is clearly designed to hold that very-average weight.
    Plasterboard will laugh at this.
There's a recent thread that showed the options. You'll want two fixings which are secured into the p'board, and which then have removable screws that'll either take hooks, or I'd just pass that wire behind their heads, after unscrewing them 3mm.
Not sure what the ideal spacing is for the two fixings, but do get them perfectly horizontal!
Have a ay with holding the mirror up by the wire, and seeing how it 'hangs'. I suspect the closer you have the two 'holds', the longer will be the lengths that go down to the frame fixings, and the more the picture will then hang forwards at the top. Does that make sense?
I think I'd be looking at spacing the fixings at around 800mm, and that should keep the mirror nicely flat against the wall. But just a guess.
Obviously you also need to take into account the height you want the mirror at; the wider the fixing spacing, the shorter will be the wire drop, and therefore the higher the picture.

The width of the mirror should straddle a couple of studs I should think. What I would try is locate studs and affix a couple of picture hooks with long enough pin to get purchase into the stud.
This way there is less disturbance to plasterboard and easier to fill and decorate if you move mirror in the future.

    Indeed.
And just redesign your room around the mirror

You can also get the mirror flat against the wall if you can get 2 screws into studs in exactly the right position, and not use the wire.
