Kitchen sink drain leaking

Hello all
I moved into a house recently and decided to clean the overflow hole in the sink (as pictured) as it was visibly filthy and not draining water properly. It was disgusting. anyway, I cleaned it and came to putting it all back together, just like how I took it off and when I tested it with water, it leaked.
It leaked from underneath the sink. So- where the brown/black plastic sits below the sink basin, it leaks from there. The actual white waste tube where it connects to the main compartment at the bottom seems to be fine.
Now I aren’t sure what has happened, if I have cleaned some sealant off it and it’s come away off the plastic thing but it now leaks. Even though it seems to be tight up against the sink basin.
Does anyone know what I can do to fix?
I’ve looked online and it appears as though plumbers putty or silicone? I’ve got some of that thin white tape but there is nowhere for that to sit on the plastic thing so that wouldn’t work
I need something that would sit between the plastic thing and then underneath of the basin- holding the two together and keeping it water tight.
Now I’ve looked at a new entire piece all together (I don’t know its name) - but I can’t find the one I have online and all look different to what I have currently
I will attach picture of what it looks like connected and not connected
Thank you

If it really leaks from there, why all other photos? The rectangular connection between the overflow part and the sink used to have an elastic sealing gasket compressed when you tighten the screw fixing the plastic part to the sink.If the gasket deteriorated or lost elasticity you have to replace it with something similar. I can suggest silicone, preferably not acetoxy one. Apply it evenly to the perimeter of the plastic part and wait until it partly sets, i.e. still can leak, but isn't sticky. Then screw tightly the part to the sink.Alternatively you can cut a new gasket from some elastic sheet, e.g. some thickish rubber or silicone mat.

I presume that you would not recommend plumbers putty then?
