Tesco remove pay in store via app

Don't know if this is the right forum subsection.
I received an email last week from Tesco informing me that they're removing the ability to pay in store using the app on the 7th March. So now you're going to have to use your separate payment card and separate clubcard.
Would anyone understand why this is being done as it seems a step backwards in terms of capability, efficiency and convenience......???

I've not heard anything but personally I find it quicker to use my combined Tesco Clubcard/Credit card

Whilst I am all for efficiency, the time difference between the current system and just tapping a phone to check out is going to be minimal.

They have probably found an increase in theft and/or fraud occurs when using app payments.

I've recently discovered Tesco giftcards give 2.5% cashback through Topcashback, so before I go shopping, I estimate how much I'll spend and buy myself a giftcard which I add to my Apple wallet.

What were the benefits of paying using their app? I wasn't even aware that was possible.

Is this using the Clubcard Pay+ (Tesco's pre-pay debit card)? that you could add to the Tesco app?

I'm guessing they are either preparing to discontinue the Pay+ product (not seen as needed in the Barclays world)

or they are trying to de-clutter the app, which can get fiddly with the Clubcard QR code plus Clubcard Plus (the 10% discount thing) QR codes AND the Clubcard Pay+ QR code if you've added that too.

EDIT : I now see that you can add ANY payment card to the Tesco app, not just their Pay+ - still makes for a lot of QR codes.

Sounds good to me.  It's a lot quicker to tap a contactless card than messing about with a stupid app on a mobile phone.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

It reminds me of fiddling about on the bus for the fare
  • probably because Barclays now own Tesco bank

It was combined with the club card. Scan the qr code and it had your club card and payment card in 1 scan.

Contactless only works for less that £100, and every now and then it randomly asks you to use chip and pin even at less than £100.
Plus you have to get the card out from wherever you keep it and put it back again.
Paying by phone does not have these issues.

I use both methods, and overall they are both convenient, and take about the same time.

I've decided to make it more complicated by buying Tesco gift cards at Airtime for 4% cashback refunded against my PAYM phone bill. Just means finding another QR code on my phone at the checkout, but the best cashback rate I can find.
