EDF Charges after Moving and closing account via a debt collection agency
Options
Moved house July 24 after paying final EDF bill and then I received a small refund to close the account.
The new house owner has just received a letter from a debt collection company on behalf of a debt for EDF for a period covering Sept of 2023 to Sept 2024 for a sum under £200.
Neither I or the new owner had received a bill from EDF and as far as i'm concerned the account was closed properly.
Who is liable for the debt, or is this likely to be for the time the new owner registered to their new electrical supplier.
I've logged onto my EDF account which still has all the bills and there is no amount outstanding.
Any help much appreciated!!!

Does your final bill issued by EDF include usage up to and including the day you stopped being legally responsible for the property (ie. the day your sale completed)? If so then it's sounds like not your problem. If you didn't provide a closing meter reading then it gets a bit messy as it can be difficult to ascertain who is responsible for what, especially if the new owner didn't provider opening meter readings.1

I no longer have the last bill however I know with certainty that I took meter readings on all utilities including EDF and the final bill took this into account. It sounds to me as though it is probably a charge for the the dates after I closed my account and the new owner is trying to push it onto me, possibly 🤷🏼0

Then check the closing meter reading is there on the final bill and that all the meter readings from one bill to another are consistent, especially for this period Sept.23 to Sept.24.
Who is the new owners energy provider? Is it still EDF?
Tell the new owner not to talk to the debt collection company but talk to EDF.
Does this debt collector letter contain a bill wil actual meter readings? The "debt" may be "fictitious" in the sense it could be an error by EDF.
On the other hand, if your completion date was in July, did the new owner change supplier in September (giving opening readings at that time) and hadn't even previously contacted EDF who would be the "deemed" supplier until then. If that's the case, the "debt" would be for that period. The new owner should contact EDF and tell them to produce a bill with meter readings, and if this is the case the start reading would match your closing reading, and the last reading on the "debt" bill would be the same as the opening reading for the new owner's new supplier.
And of course, it's then the new owner who is liable. Your completion date defines the date where your legal liability ended.
Whatever the actual situation, EDF should produce a bill with meter readings.1 -
