Summerhouse electrics

I have an old summerhouse that has it's own electrics (own consumer box, few plugs, light). The summerhouse was there when I moved in so is probably 20+ years old. It's becoming a hazard due to storm damage. I want to replace summerhouse with a new one.
Does anyone know if an electrician can temporarily disconnect electrics then add back into new summerhouse. Can anyone advise on cost of this too? I'm a single mum and have high anxiety so having a man into my property is worrying and I just want to know what to expect. Thanks

We were told that our outdoor electrics were dodgy and would need to be connected properly to our fuse box (rather than just running a cable) which was going to cost a bit.  No quote was given but I suspect we'd be talking about £200 and upwards.

I suspect for you that they might say they need to replace kit that was not of current standards so that's more than  just a simple unplug and then plug back in kind of job.

There are women electricians available - you would have to check whether there is one in your area.

I'm assuming regs are the same for Scotland (assuming that's where you are) as they are for the south coast of England.

  • Oh no! Not what I wanted to hear. I assumed it would be an easyish job. But I guess I should expect the worst. It all looks professionally done to my knowledge.
I will just have to brave it and call someone up. I had a look but doesn't look like any females in my area.

Do you know how the cable is run to the summer house, Scottish? Is it in the ground? Can you see where it comes out?
And, in the house's CU (Consumer Unit - 'fuse box'), is there a breaker marked for the Summer house?
To just isolate the power to make it safe whilst you decide what to do with the SH should be very easy, and less-than-1-hour job.

If you don't know an electrician recommended by family or friends then see if your local Trading Standards has a vetted trader scheme or if not Which, who also vet who they allow to advertise on their site. NICIEC and NAPIT also have find a registered tradesman function on their websites.  I'd avoid using other trader finding websites as they do not properly vet people and it is hit and miss whether you end up with a cowboy.

£200 wouldn't get much done - possibly about half a day's labour without any materials at best.

It's becoming a hazard due to storm damage.

    Is it beyond repair?

A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".
