Hi, Our 9 year old Westie has just been diagnosed with Diabetes.
Has anyone any experience of having a dog that also has Acid Reflux and a number of Allergies, so he has lived most of his life from a puppy on a Hypoallergenic diet. This means that feeding is very much focused on keeping his stomach acid under control - so smaller portions but more meal times, currently three a day plus a small snack at bedtime.
So we need to find food that will cover both conditions - any advice?

Not quite the same but i've had 2 cats (unrelated) that were diabetic. The condition was handled with twice daily insulin injections (very easy) and giving them a high protein/low carb diet.
Easiest for me was to order food online from zooplus. Even the vets admitted that it would be more expensive to buy specialty food from them. Pet shops did have some food I could have used but it was not that cheap and there was the faff of ordering and then collecting it. What I found with zooplus was that I could check the ingredients and sometimes what was labelled as ordinary food was really no different than the pricier diabetic diet stuff.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. Hi! Managing both diabetes and acid reflux in your Westie can be tricky, but it's definitely possible. Since he's already on a hypoallergenic diet, you'll need to find a diabetic-friendly food that's also easy on his stomach. Look for high-protein, low-carb hypoallergenic options—some prescription diets cater to both needs. Instead of commercial diabetic food, which might not suit his allergies, you could work with your vet to create a homemade diet using safe proteins and fiber-rich vegetables to stabilize blood sugar. Since you're feeding smaller, frequent meals, that already helps with both conditions. Also, ask your vet about adding a safe acid reducer like famotidine to his routine. Have you noticed any specific ingredients that trigger his acid reflux more often? That could help narrow down the best options.{Signature removed by Forum Team - if you are not sure why we have removed your signature please contact the Forum Team}0
