19 insurance companies on Experian which I have no knowledge of

I tried to upgrade my phone contract over the telephone with 3 mobile on 10th February, and after an hour was told the system had gone down and he would call me back the next evening. He did not call, so on the following Monday I called again, they took me through the credit check and i failed the credit check ( to my surprise as my credit score is good, and have had no problems up till now, and pay all my bills ontime).
So I went on to experian to check what was happening.
I could see the 2 checks done on my account on 10th February, but immediately after these checks were 19 credit checks with a whole load of insurance companies????
I am now panicking, I have contacted my bank, and 3 mobile but am getting nowhere.
I have also contacted experian and informed them too.
Should i be worried? Why are all these strange companies showing on my account?
I also noticed that there was a couple of others for credit cards back in November, but i have NEVER applied for a credit card!
Please help???

They could be soft searches, if you go onto a website like MoneySuperMarket dot com or similar you agree to share your details with third parties - these then may do a soft search before "offering" you a deal...

Can you confirm - these are checks / searches and not actual ACCOUNTS?

Sounds like the companies that are doing soft searches either for where you have recently gone direct or used comparison site. Some could even be from aggregators who the insurers go to to get credit checks and they will do monthly checks regardless.

In the vast majority of cases it is nothing to worry about. Keep an eye for any hard searches or accounts being created, that's where the damage is done.

Do you have any form of insurance coming up for renewal in the next 6 weeks, Home, Car etc? Done any dummy quotes in the last year or two that would be nearing their anniversary?

Aggregators like Confused.com typically hold your data when you get a quote and a little before the renewal season rerun the data through in preparation for you returning to shop around again. Many insurers do a soft search or ID check with the CRAs as part of the quote process, for example to decide if they'll offer instalments or insist on up front payment.

If these are soft searches then YOU see them, but nobody else does - this is not what is affecting your file and causing you to fail the credit check!
