Plugging overly large holes.......

...where there are electrical wires emerging.
I had some electrical work done recently which necessitated a bit of drilling to feed in new wires.
My house is old and fragile and some of the drilling has caused big, ugly holes which I'd like to fill/conceal in some way.
Can I use any type of filler for this or, given that the wiring is sitting in the holes, does it have to be something special - and if so, what?

Regular filler will do the job. Depending on the size of the holes, it might be advisable to use a reinforcing mesh (scrim tape).
Dampen the wall around the hole first will reduce the tendency for the filler to crack. PVA or SBR painted on to the old plaster may also help.

    Photos, please, Rusty.
It might be good to protect/cap the wires, so the filler doesn't bond to them.
  • Holes or channels?

Yes, a photo or two might be good. We need to see what you're dealing with.

What result do you want to achieve? The simplest way is to wrap the cables with some soft film and then fill the hole with expanding foam. Excessive film and foam can be easily trimmed after foam sets.

  • Just to tidy it up somewhat and make it less obvious and ugly.
