Selling gold - scrap value or as a piece of jewellery?

Hi - I've been asked to find out if it is better to sell my Mum's gold charm bracelet for the scrap gold value or to try to sell it as an item of vintage jewellery.
The total weight is 52g, although there may be one charm which is not gold (a long service charm from my Dad's old company).
The chain was bought in the mid 1960s and the charms bought as birthday or Christmas presents over the next few years. There are of their time - a cigarette lighter, a ten shilling note in a box etc.
I don't know where or how to start researching this. Who do you trust to give you a true answer?
Any thoughts?
