Employer repayment

Options
A timeline of events.
Dec 2018 left my job without working notice.
May 2019 HMTC repaid my income tax from the previous tax year about £240
July 2019 after agreement on a repayment of overpaid wages i repaid my ex employer the agreed amount of £570
June 2020 HMRC ask me for £120 tax back as underpaid. Covid times and rang up and they said would send a letter explaining, never got the letter.
December 2022 receive another letter asking for exactly double the amount. Rang them and got some sort of explanation as the employer had entered another repayment for 8p different to the 2020 one and now I owed double.
Rang employer and they did nothing, sent a letter to HMRC that reply was not connected. By now I accepted i owed the £120 and understood what had happened.
October 2024 another letter still asking for double. I contacted HMRC again, nothing they can do. Contacted employer again and got a reply informing when they had made the two copy entries for the 8p difference on my single repayment. I have since sent 5 emails without reply. I contacted their callcentre again and got given an HR contact who have forwarded the last 2 emails on to the same department that has ignored the previous.
January 2025 HMRC have now got bailiffs contacting me for the money and I have caved in and paid HMRC the £240 or so they say I own but made it clear I only owe half the amount.

My problem now is how do i get my ex employer wage department to correct their duplicate entry. They won't give me a complaints email or a manager to contact. I have considered writing to my MP. I paid the amount as I don't want to have it on my credit record but it shows how hard it is to get obvious errors corrected. A friend suggested going to the Small Claims court.

I can imagine how many people must be stressed out by matters like this, fortunately for me not a fortune but it is so difficult to get things corrected.

Any advice and help would be much appreciated.

Thank you for listening.

Who would you sue at the Small Claims Court and for what?

HMRC have charged you the correct tax on the information supplied to them.

Yiur employer submitted duplicate figures to HMRC but they did not charge you the extra £120.

You could try contacting HMRC employers unit by  claiming you are disputing a payment submitted by your ex employer.

After finally getting correct information from HMRC in October 2024 I accepted that they are correct and they can do nothing. I have asked for managers or people who can help but they won't let me past the front line so to speak. When I rang last week to say I had paid even though it was an incorrect amount they have now finally sent me a document to send to the employer telling them what they need to do. But in that document they claimed they had been in touch with the employer in October as well, with no reply. The employer was DWP with their wages contracted out to a large organisation with a Trustpilot score less than the bailiff HMRC employed!!

I have now 5 emails since they replied to the first that haven't been answered and the relevant department can only accept emails. Will test their complaints department next, if they have one that speaks to people.

    Any other ideas welcome.

    Thank you
