Santander edge 3£ maintenance fee

  • I am on my second Edge Saver without paying into my Edge current account at all.
Now Santander have informed me that they will be closing my Edge current account in March as I haven't used it. It will stay open if I pay in £1.
I want to keep my Edge Saver but I don't want to pay the £3 monthly fee. Can I just pay in the £1 and that's it?

Yes, I've had the same requirement with Lloyds. Banks like to close dormant accounts, and making a single payment avoids them being closed

Good hint, off to pay a second quid into my Santander CA.

I have had another email threatening to close my Edge account, even though I put £1 in. Maybe it needs to be £1 per month?

Do you leave the £1 in there ? I keep £1 sitting there and move £1 in and out every couple of months.

  • Or perhaps set up a couple of standing orders to shuttle a small amount of money in and out of the account each month?

I deposit £5pm into my current account and then send £1 every Monday to my Santander Limited Edition account.

Records 4-5 transactions a month and I have £52 + pennies interest in my saver account towards my boiler service each January

Do you have any other current accounts with Santander that are actually used, or not?

I have 2 Santander Edge accounts, I only ever move money in one of them when the saver bonus period ends!

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

I have an Edge current and Saver account but I've always had 2 x direct debits and transfer in at least £500 so I get charged the £3 fee. If I stop doing this, would they stop charging the fee?

It wouldn't hurt to try right, as in I won't lose my Saver account and it's 6% interest?
