John Lewis Instore Exchange with no receipt

Hey,
It seems like it's 100% against their policy. But I thought I would ask.
Valentine's gift, a top but it's the wrong size.
The item is unopened, fully sealed, - never tried on, as it's the wrong size obviously.
If I wanted it exchanged for the correct size. So not looking for a refund, or gift voucher. Would they do that. Or is there no chance.
I guess for consumer rights the answer is - I have none. Unless I go back to the person and confess I lied about my size? And they can get an exchange. But, I'm not going to do that. So - the top will just not get worn.
Thanks for any advice/abuse

As I understand it, it is only the person who purchased something (& could presumably prove that) that can return an item. But this is in the realm of what happens at Christmas as well - presents that are not quite right being returned for an exchange.
My philosophy is that if you don't ask, you don't get. So go to a JL with the item wrapped up in at least 2 bags so it's obvious you haven't just picked it up off the shelf and go and ask someone very politely if you could exchange it for this other one that is the right size. State that you are not, under any circumstances suggesting you have a refund or a voucher, that all you want is this lovely thing that unfortunately was purchased in the wrong size. Maybe a grin and humour as in "I mean, what was s/he thinking? Do I look like a size X to you??" If someone is having a bad day or has been overrun with hundreds of returns already that day they might say no but hopefully not.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe and Old Style Money Saving boards. If you say nothing and the top simply just does not get worn, then the lovely person that kindly gave you this gift will notice and quite likely be upset if they think you don't like the gift or, even worse, don't like them.
I also don't see any reason why you could not ask at JL customer returns in store. Have the top in a bag and don't fiddle with the bag, go straight to the customer service desk and explain the gift was received but no receipt and could you exchange it. The worst thing they can say is "no" so you thank them for their time, put the top bag in the bag and leave the store.
I assume the giver did not include a gift receipt.0 -
Thanks
I will give that a go. Or maybe I could just not eat for the next two years... to try and squeeze into the top... hmm0 -
If you don't ask you certainly won't get it exchanged. The worst that can happen is they refuse.0

You have a slight chance if its a JL own brand top - if its a branded item, there is next to no chance. But the policy is that you need a gift receipt to return a gift.0
