NI credits

Hi, I was hoping someone could help.
I have a few years with incomplete national insurance contributions that I'm looking at paying. However I want to check if I can get NI credits for these years first.
I was getting them until my children turned 12 then they stopped as I know they do, but I was still getting child tax credits for several years after this. Last year we were transferred to universal credit and got NI credits for the past year. So during my 'missing years' we just got child tax credit. Should I have NI credits when I was on this?
It seems bizarre I didn't get any on child tax credit but did once we were on Universal credit. Our income didn't change, we just transferred to UC.
I've searched the Internet for answers but come up blank.
Thanks in advance.
