Credit Report - Incorrect data

Options
Morning Folks, it's a 2 question post.

1:  I took a car on HP back in 2017, I paid half of it and handed the car back, it still had a balance of £634, but just ignored it as really was struggling at the time, hence giving the car back.  Anyway on the credit report it shows as "Paid and Closed". Yet every month I have a nice green tick not showing the balance going up or down, but as it has been paid sort of thing, there is no default on this one, just says paid and closed, any idea why this would still show after 6 years?

2:  I lived in a cottage at one time, and addresses wouldn't show correctly on websites, usually had to enter it manually.

Under addresses it shows an incorrect address.  I emailed them "Credit Agency" to say it was incorrect but they said they can't change it.  Any ideas what I can do about this?

If the loan provider hasn't set the status to settled or default then it won't disappear. It usually stays on your credit report 6 years after the settled or default date. It may be worth contacting them as they may still have an account open for you.

You should be able to dispute it as never having lived at that address. I do that with discrepancies to my address. They usually remove them after investigation. Which credit reference agency did you contact? Some websites like Credit Karma (TransUnion), Clearscore (Equifax) and Totally Money (TransUnion) can allow for a ticket to be opened. There is also checkmyfile.com which checks all 3 TransUnion, Equifax and Experian but you'll be charged £14.99 per month until you cancel for that one. You can request a statutory credit report from Experian directly for free but you have to wait a bit after the request to see this.

Be wary about contacting the company as you risk acknowledging any potential debt and could be giving them an opportunity to restart the 6 year statute barred timer. I'd avoid writing to them and keep correspondence verbal over the phone to start.

If you do have to write to them then I'd consider carefully wording any correspondence to avoid acknowledging any potential debt. To start off you could send them a DSAR requesting a copy of all the information they hold on file for you. If it is incorrect, then you have a right to have it corrected under GDPR rules. Once this information is up to date, you can then request they send updated copies to the CRAs. The CRAs only report the information they are given, so you need to get it updated at the source to have it updated on your files.
