My DH has always treated DS1 (mine by birth) as his own and I have done likewise with DS2 (his by birth). DS3 is fostered and he is treated the same too. Our kids have between them 3 biological mothers and 3 biological fathers and don't share a single gene. They are however brothers and we love and treat them equally.
If your OH wants to be a serious part of your life he needs to accept that his decision to do so carries a responsibility and the action of doing so has consequences.
Your OH is very lucky to be invited to join your family. He must do so without reservation or decline the offer.

Again, some great feedback so thanks all :T

When I say we talked, I should clarify that the conversation got cut short rather than we didn't come to any conclusions meaning we didn't agree or similar.

He hasn't at any point said he doesn't think he should contribute, or expressed doubt about supporting us. I think it's more me if I'm being honest, something in me feels awkward about expecting him to buy stuff for the girls when their dad doesn't contribute, almost like I'm saying well it doesn't matter if their dad doesn't pay because you will kind of thing... I know it sounds silly but that's me...
