Claiming UC at the correct time

I believe I'm right in thinking once savings go below £16000 we can claim Universal Credit, we previously recieved UC, however when it was discovered we had reached savings more than £16000 the claim was stopped. My query is as we're paying our rent, council tax, basically everything out of savings it certainly won't last long, when can we put in a claim for UC in anticipation of our savings reducing?   Tia

Technically once your below 16k but if you find you will go over again quickly then only you can judge that.  If you need anything new do it now phone, laptop, tablet basically anything to live white goods or a break.

You can claim as soon as your savings dip below £16,000.  Technically it's based on capital at the end of the monthly assessment period, but you do need to be eligible at the time of opening your claim too.
  • Yes you have to wait to claim until you dip below the £16,000.
