NI contributions and pip

Options
Hope this is the right place and someone can help me or advise me.

So after a friend told me she was missing ni pension contributions i thought i would check mine as up till this point i didn’t know you could do.

So i found that i have no credits to my pension since my son turned 18 and left education until now.

I have been unable to work for around 14 years now due to disability and im in receipt of full pip for that time frame. Due to my husbands earnings i am unable to claim uc and couldn’t claim esa because of no credits. I’ve even tried new esa but not entitled as i haven’t made any contributions in the last 2 years.

I have tried asking but nobody seems to know how to help.

Does this mean i will only receive a small/no state pension or is there anything i can do about this.

PIP doesn’t include NI credits. If you were claiming child benefit you would have received class 3 NI credits up until your youngest reached 12.

You can claim New style ESA as a credits only claim with Limited Capability for work, if found to have this. You would need to provide fit notes and go through a work capability assessment. You would not receive any money.

Failing all that poppy advises... get a pension forecast (online on the government website)... see if ultimately filling missing years (voluntary NI contributions) is worthwhile... unfortunately a major date is coming up on 5 April for to do that with several years before what is normally allowed.

If you do eventually get a credits only claim for new style ESA, you might be able to claim backdated credits for the period that you did not know you could have claimed credits only, you would need to apply for such backdated credits via the National Insurance Contributions Office.
