Broken lock

Hello, I live in a new build and my front door is not locking its the sort of one which you don’t need a key to lock from the inside. Whenever I pull the handle up the locking mechanism doesn’t engage making it impossible to lock the door any help would be appreciated

Have you tried oiling the moving parts? Mine was a bit sticky and this resolved it, not sure what you mean by not needing to lock it from the inside....."You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "1

I had this and despite trying everything i couldn't fix it. A locksmith fixed it for £55, no clue what he actually did but he did give me a new key so changed that at least0

If its the later you really still need to lock the door as were someone to remove the outside handle its likely they could then open the door with a screwdriver to open the door.
Oiling can be a solution, also ensure that the points on the door and the spaces they go into on the door frame are aligned, the door may need minor adjustment due to settlement etc given they are partially but not fully engaging.0 -
I'd agree with a previous poster. First thing is to have a quick look, see if there's anything obviously amiss (even something as daft as a small pebble or a build-up of leaves or something that's stopping the door from closing properly). A spot of 3-in-1 oil on the moving parts won't hurt (it's not a bad idea to do this every so often anyway).locknotworking said:I live in a new build0

Sounds like your door hooks are not locking-in due to not alignment to opening in frame. Could be that door hinges are dropping and need bringing up.
Open your door, pull handle up, so that lock hooks come out. Now slowly close door to frame and observe lock hooks aliment to opening in door frame.
It's very likely that your door hinges need adjusting from door dropping down. Very simple to do.2 -
Another way to test Sam's theory is to open the door, lift the handle up fully (as if for locking), and then try actually locking it - turning the key outside, and the thumb-turn inside. If that works smoothly and repeatedly, then there's a good chance it's as he suggested - the door and frame are out of alignment, so the lock hooks cannot move their full travel when the door is closed.
Sometimes the receiving striker plates are adjustable. Photos?
Another thing to try, as it caught me out on our new bifolds - lift the handle with the door in the closed position, and then try lifting it a bit more! Ours had a two-stage 'feel', where it moved a large way upwards, smoothly and without too much effort until it seemingly came to a halt, but that wouldn't allow the key to turn. I then worked out it needed a further lift - an inch or so, against a noticeably greater resistance, before it properly came to a halt - then the keys turned easily!0
