New Smart meter giving crazy bills 4500£ in two months

Afternoon all,
I  have got some problems with YU energy provider for my gas and was wondering if anyone has had smart meter problems concluding in huge bills.
I  have been with YU energy for 20 months and have been paying around £400 by direct debit every month, had included actual readings and had a smart.
In November 2024 I    saw the actual bill was £731 so decided to pay in full.
We have a small BnB and the winters are very quiet so wanted to pay the bill off so we were ahead for winter,
Also in November we had a new smart meter fitted. Not sure why. YU energy requested this.
Two months late in January 2025 we get a bill for £4500.
No contact was made by way of explanation, and when I  called a was informed a huge range of answers, I   raised complaints but still no one has contacted me.

On the  January bill there are various refund amounts then the full 4500 bill.
The previous meter reads were 4 digits eg 4531,
The new meter is 6 digits
Clearly there is a glitch to say the least. Has anyone had similar new smart meter problems?

Check the measure they are using for charging - your old meter sounds like it was an old imperial one, and I wonder if that detail has not been changed and they are using the wrong multiplier for your readings now. It SHOULD say that your readings are in m3 - NOT ft3.

This is nothing to do with your meter being smart if so by the way - it could have happened even if your meter had been changed for an old fashioned one!

You need to study your bill carefully.  There should be a final reading on your old meter, which hopefully you also recorded yourself just before it was replaced.  Then there should be an initial reading on your new meter, usually zero but not necessarily.  Then a recent reading on which the last part of your bill is based.  And, as @EssexHebridean says, the old and new meters could read in different units.

YU are a business supplier and the general protection for domestic suppliers does not apply.

However since December OFGEM  does get involved in such disputes/   I am involved in one with a different supplier -completed an online form over the weekend and had a phone call from OFGEM  on Monday morning.

Do the checks of @Reed_Richards  above and follow YU complaints procedure first.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
