Didn't realise I'd spent that much.

Options
Just received my first annual statement.

Seems I've spent over £4,000 in the last 12 months.  :open_mouth:

Didn't seem anything like that amount.

Maybe worth checking statements monthly and keeping an eye on each line to see if anything is being wasted

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

  • Not sure what you mean by wasted.

I don't pay any interest, if that's what you mean?

That is only £333 per month on average, with how many people do not perceive monthly costs and how they accumulate I can imagine that one could not realise.

It is similar to people who complain that their morning coffee and pastry on the way to work and buying lunch does not add up to much, until they actually look at the numbers and realise they are spending £2,500+ a year, small but regular amounts add up very quickly.

Are you using a card with cashback?

Unneeded purchases, buying things like a coffee every morning that you think does not cost much, but adds up to a significant amount, things like paying for parking regularly when there is free parking 200 meters away, that kind of thing.

There is nothing inherently wrong with spending money, but many people spend money in a way that is wasteful for what their stated goals are.

for budgeting purposes it is not so much how much you have spent but what you have spent it on
  • long as you keep within your means and don't pay interest that's all that matters, just don't do anything to lose any promotions

Your original post seemed to suggest you were concerned by the level of spend?

I'm not really sure what the OP's issue here is.

  • just don't do anything to lose any promotions

    I don't think I have any promotions.

Still puzzled - what responses were you hoping for if you were essentially just sharing the fact that you don't have a handle on your finances?
