My best move was installing a Drayton Wiser.  Cost me £99 from Screwfix  and simply replaced the existing programmer, similar unit to as shown in your post, 2 screws releases the old unit and clip the new one on, no wiring involved and the thermostat goes wherever you want it. To replace yours like for like costs £65 to £ 85 !  Then all the programming and timings are done through the app.  Can turn the heating on or off or adjust the temperature whilst laying in bed or even when 500 miles away !  Changing the timings is done sitting in your armchair rather than with your head stuck in the airing cupboard looking at the stupid small screen and swearing when your adjustment times out. Going on holiday ?  Set away mode with a low temp to stop any risk of freezing then switch back to normal whilst travelling home, toasty house and tank of hot water on arrival.
Easy DIY job. Can you change a plug ?  If so you can fit a Wiser !  If you can't do it yourself any handyman / friend can do it, you don't need a plumber or electrician.

Thanks, nice idea but I don't have an existing one.
    Will save info for future.

The heating worked fine just on the old trvs (standard for these builds) but when I had new ones fitted and a new actuator all went to pot and the boiler went into overheat.
So I'm starting from scratch with a thermostat.

Currently having to put heating on and off with no thermostat and no trv in the living room to release heat.
Lovely and toasty but can't leave it on.
Rung to confirm if/who/ anyone coming to see it and left message.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

You replace that timer in the cupboard with the control unit, take old one off, put new one on, plug and play, no wiring necessary, two screws underneath.  You then run up the app and follow the instructions, took under an hour all done.
Looks though like you need the heating repairing then worry about a thermostat later.  If your boiler is overheating after having something external replaced then that is where the problem most likely lays. My money would be on the actuator possibly not being correctly wired, these things often confuse many "plumbers". My son had most of the replaceable parts of his boiler changed over 2 years for overheating and they never fixed it stating new boiler needed, took me about half an hour and a £25 part to sort it out - and it was nothing to do with the boiler.  You need someone who can think, proper fault diagnosis seems to have gone out the window in favour of changing every possible part in the hope it works.

You confirmed what I thought but had several heating guys check and say all working.
Including the one who, when I told him who did the actuator sad 'oh, my goodness ' or words to that effect.

Haven't heard back from the guy after call today to ensure someone will come. Give him till tomorrow then start again Monday.
Maybe a blessing in disguise as can start afresh.
