Yes in the first photos when they were open they look messy which is most of the time

Could you not draw them back not quite as far and then use a tie back for the lower half 

It would obviously reduce the light coming in but worth a try

Thanks for your help. 
Have realised light is coming through the top and sides so will go for blinds too (blackout, I guess) to prevent that, fitting them inside the window recess.
Any recommendations for where to source them?
