Hi, I know there are lots of tv licence threads & in general I understand the if you do not watch live tv, you don't need a licence/don't engage/politely refuse process & I haven't had a licence, nor needed one for YEARS. this morning I get a guy who says, "I'm from a meter reading company nd I've been asked to pass you this.." *shows me the licence letter, doesn't even have the street number on, just street name. When I clarify & ask, "are you tv licensing?" he says something really weird about the meter company. I ask again, "to be clear, are you tv licence?". when he again tries to get all "politician" on me & verbally dance about I straight up tell him I haven't got time & he was making me late for an appointment (true). I take the letter, tear it up, saying, "I don't have a telly so the doesn't concern me" & shut the door.

but is anyone able to confirm this weird approach of "meter company?" because it threw me & felt threatening due to its veiled nature. Also I dont want to start a stream of declaration because I dont want the BBc to have all my data, even if its opting out. So am I still ignoring this stupid, stupid licensing sales pitch still?

If Capita employees are pretending to be meter readers, you likely need to make a complaint.

I presume you later pieced the letter back together to establish whether it was indeed related to TV licencing as you imagined or a genuine letter about meters ?

I think that's what irks me most, thank you. I am assuming Capita is the company?

A few years ago, a meter reader for ,I think, an outside company contracted to read meters on behalf of suppliers, reported that he had been asked to post general letters about TV licensing when out reading meters.
     Perhaps its started again !!

Meter reading companies do hand deliveries of standard TVL enforcement letters/calling cards.

Normally, I think they just deliver & run, with no intention of making contact with householders.

It doesn't mean anything (other than being yet another underhand tactic).   You can safely ignore.

If I one of these knocking on my door, I'd be asking for his/her ID. Take it inside, lock the door, and then call the police. Could be a conman casing the area looking for easy targets to rob....

I had a visit from a bloke who said he was from TV licencing, this was about 1 o'clock, he was wearing a bodycam.

He showed me an ID but as I wasn't wearing my glasses I couldn't make it out but I didn't tell him that.

He was quite polite, not aggressive in any way, asked me to confirm my name, he already had the details on his tablet, I just agreed as I have nothing to hide, he asked why I had not renewed my TV licence, I told him I now watch everything by downloading it on my computer.

He asked if he could come in to see my disconnected TV I said no, he said OK.

    He asked if I was over 75 I said I was 80.

He typed in his tablet then said you won't be bothered any more then he left.

    This is in Scotland.

Anyone who has been asked to pass you something should put it through the letter box…

Advise any future similar callers of this and do not engage with them.
