Starling Bank

Options
I have held a bank account with their saving spaces in Starling for a few years. I am aware that they are stopping their standard accounts from generating interest, and so I contacted them to understand what was going on. They said that if I wanted an account that generated interest, I would need to apply for an Easy Saver account. Having a very high credit score and having never had a problem with Starling, I applied for the Easy Saver, but was declined. I asked why and they said I could complain, so I complained. Their response was that their new account had certain limitations, but they would not tell me what the limitations were and then they said they still could not give me an account. I am on the electoral roll, am solvent, have income, but I have no idea why they wont give me an account. I have no alternative but to vote with my feet, but it's a pity as various people pay into that account and I will have to change all that. Has anyone else had a similar experience or more light to shed on this?

Why don't open a savings account with another bank or building society?

Lots of people have had the same experience. There is no logical criteria that has come out through people giving their own perspective of their own financial position.

One of the other big pains is the fact they have not moved the spaces to the savings account, so you can no longer use them and gain interest.

If you're referring to a current account, you can use the Current Account Switching Service to migrate it elsewhere, the advantage of which is that inbound payments are automatically redirected to your new account, i.e. you don't need to handle that yourself.

There aren't many current accounts that pay interest so why the need to switch?

Kroo still offer decent interest rates (3.25% i think) even on their savings pots but they don't use the current account switching service. They are FCS protected though.

There are plenty of accounts that pay better interest than the Starling Easy Saver so they may have done you a favour by not letting you have it
  • And you're only allowed one Easy Saver "account" as well, so pointless from a Spaces point of view.

Your credit history will have no impact on an application for a savings account as no credit is involved in it. You can't go overdrawn on a savings account, for example.

Leave the current account open, for those payments you want coming in, but do your everyday banking and savings elsewhere.

I have many, many current and savings accounts with multiple providers.

The credit score gimmick is never used by lenders, they don't even see it, besides, as above, they don't credit check for savings (maybe an ID check only). It's a business decision for whatever reason, I opened one ok on my personal account (setup solely for the joint account) as it's easier for our house money to sit inside the account. I wouldn't use them for my savings though

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
