Hello fellow forum people, I am new to this , please bare with.
I have appliance insurance for each of my house appliances, and have for 35yrs been with Domestic & General Insurance. I have had no issues except for the last recent one.
I have lived on a houseboat for 10yrs, and D&G engineers have visited the boat many times to help with repairs etc. This last time they have refused to allow the engineers to come on board. I had to source the repairs on my own. Today I emailed the CEO & Complaints team to ask what date they had changed their policy to not allow engineers onto boats. A simple reply was , that they couldn’t tell me. I need to know because then I can ask for all my monthly payments for 3 appliances to be refunded, and remove them from D&Gs insurance.
I’m not sure where to go if they don’t give me this information. Please help.
Thank you

D&G sell both insurance and service plans, you need to check which of the two yours are (most are service plans) as it will dictate what options are open to you.

What is the mechanism of going from the dock to your boat? On a canal or something else? I can certainly see a potential H&S issue if they are having to "jump" from a moving pontoon onto a moving boat but its different if there is a sliding boat step with side rails or equivalent.

Have you actually tried a second call out to see if it was an engineer being a bit funny?

D&G do explicitly exclude boats for certain products (eg boiler cover or plumbing) but imagine they are playing a H&S card in your case.
  • Never had an issue with engineer visits before. We have safe gang plank from solid pontoon, and we always guide anyone on/off our boat. We have had yearly service plans for all our appliances. I have looked at their website in depth but cannot find a way of reading anything relevant to the problem or who to contact. The Complaints executive is being very careful with the email responses. Who can I get advice on this?

Taking a step back, have your insurance policies been good value over the last 35 years?

For the majority of people over that period of time they will have paid out considerably more than they would have claimed for.

May be time to reflect on whether it is worth continuing at all in the same way. Putting the same money each month in a savings account can be far more beneficial, especially if you are going to have to find your own repair man anyway.

If its insurance, then you can go to the Financial Ombudsman once you've had their final response.

If its a service plan then you are looking at court.
