I guess the point is that if the driver claims they spoke to the OP, why wouldn’t they just hand the parcel to the OP. It would be truly bizarre if the OP had spoken to the driver and then told them they didn’t want to take it from them but to put it under the car instead.

I would assume the driver 'had a phone call saying I'm not in, just leave it under the car.'

I would also assume that in this case 'verbally' is used to mean 'no record of it'

It would seem that there are three main possibilities;
The driver did receive an instruction but got confused and left your parcel under your car rather than a different parcel under a different car and someone later stole the parcel

The driver made up the instruction story because they were in a hurry and someone later stole the parcel

The driver photographed the parcel on your property (not on your doorstep) and then walked back off with it

In any case be adamant with the retailer that no instruction was given and that under your car is in no way an agreed safe place.
Also note that the instruction to leave under the car was not recorded until after you had raised the issue with the carrier.
